The Suez Canal ordeal

By: Kirtika and Neelarya

The Suez canal, as we all know, is a human-made waterway that connects both the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. Currently, Suez Canal has been blocked since last Tuesday by a large boat. This has caused a huge hindrance as almost 12% of world trade makes its way through the canal. However, the crises have been averted and as per reports, the ships are now making their way through the Suez Canal faster than ever.

Before the crisis was averted, almost 306 were stuck on the line. To help sort out the issue of the backlog caused by the ship named Ever Given, a 1,312-foot- long ship, the Suez Canal Authority may increase the number of vessels moving via the waterway each day. Although the daily average traffic of the canal totals 40 to 50 ships, the highest number of authorized vessels is 106 vessels a day.

This mishap has led to the blocking off the Suez Canal, which hampered the world trading operations drastically as the global shipping pass was blocked. As per reports, it may take another week to normalize the traffic jam in the canal and there would be a disruption in the supply chain for the next few months. Equipment shortages, port congestion, and capacity shortages are something that the ships passing through the Canal will experience in the next few months.
